Bye, bye unofficial pie

October 11, 2007

Why should we have only an “unofficial” state pie? The General Assembly can take up the important task of making it official, and it (probably) woudn’t even cost us any tax increase:

Did you know there are only two official state pies in the United States?

It’s true. Apple pie, that tangy, tart pastry so tied to American history, claims Vermont as home; and key lime pie has been knighted the official state pie of Florida.

It’s hard to believe that more states haven’t jumped at the chance to sweep up the one pie recipe that exemplifies their fresh, local ingredients and provincial flavors.

Of course, there are many unofficial state pies.

Texas has dibs on pecan.

Hawaii is noted for its macadamia nut cream pie.

And Georgia is famous for its southern peach pie.

Indiana, on the other hand, has a somewhat unusual dessert that has been christened the “unofficial” state pie — the sugar cream pie, or “Hoosier pie.”

Sugar cream pie? How boring. Who decided this was the unofficial one? My mother made an awesome strawberry-rhubarb pie, and I do a killer sweet potato pie. I nominate one of those for the official Hoosier pie, and I will be contacting my legislators. If nothing else, it should get them off their obsession with property taxes.

Although not an “official” pie, the MOON-PIE might work for Indiana…if all ELSE fails.
