Be proud, John

June 16, 2008

Michelle (“I’m proud of this country for the first time in my adult life”) Obama has apparently found a kindred spirit in — John McCain:

“I’ll admit to you … that it’s tough in some respects,” McCain said when asked by a questioner at a town hall meeting how to be proud of the country.
“We have not always done things right and we mismanaged the war in Iraq very badly for nearly four years.”

Actually, it’s pretty easy to be proud of this country. What we stand for are the ideas that can make the world more and more civilized and humane. We haven’t always lived up to our ideals — that’s why they’re called ideals — but few countries have gone as far as we have in trying to make up for past  mistakes. Considering how his wife reacted to Michelle’s remarks, McCain ought to get the hell pounded out of him for this. McCain’s humble act is getting harder to stomach.

It’s hard to be optimistic about “our” commitment to civilization and humanity when a non-trivial segment of our political leadership is in a full throated roar of righteous indignation over recognition of habeas corpus.

She didn’t say ”I’m proud of this country for the first time in my adult life”, she said “I’m really proud of this country for the first time in my adult life.”

It wasn’t a change from being ashamed to being proud. It was a change from being ordinary proud to being exceptionally proud.

Shh, don’t confuse the folks with facts. We’re not allowed to muck about with nuanced speech.
