Unspeakable

August 24, 2008

When we read about some crimes, we start thinking about the worst punishments imaginable, something vile and unspeakable, preferably in a setting that would allow the public to buy tickets and watch:

A San Antonio couple is accused of trying to trying to trade sex with the woman’s 5-year-old daughter for an apartment, a used car and child care for her 10-month old daughter.

Jennifer Richards, 25, and her married boyfriend, Sean Michael Block, 40, appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Nancy Stein Nowak on Friday. Richards is charged with using interstate facilities to transmit information about a minor. Block is charged with distributing child pornography.

[. . .]

Richards “was of the belief that these sexual interactions would be a positive experience for (her daughter) and that Richards would receive sexual gratification” from watching, according to the affidavit.

Most of what we imagine doing to this couple would qualify as “cruel and unusual” punishment. We need the cold logic of the law to protect us against the worst instincts of our own passions as much as we need it to fight the evil intentions of tyrants.

I hope my son doesn’t hear about that law. I am already getting little enough news about my grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
