Chicago dreamin’

October 15, 2008

The steady flow of bad budget news out of City Hall continued Tuesday, as Mayor Richard Daley announced he will shut down city services except for police and fire for three days during the holidays.

City workers will be told to take unpaid days off the day after Thanksgiving, on Christmas Eve and on New Year’s Eve this year and next year for a total of six “partial shutdown” days.

If there is a big snowstorm or other emergency, Daley said, City Hall would call some workers back to the job.

“This is a good thing for the city, the taxpayers,” said Daley, who hopes to save $20 million from the plan.

If one city can save $20 million just from shutting down “non-essential” services for three days, just imagine the hundreds of millions that could be saved if every city did it. I know, a silly dream . . .
